About

Attack Helicopter Association Mission

Guided by its commitment to preserving heritage, educating minds, and inspiring hearts, the Attack Helicopter Association (AHA) honors the service and sacrifice of military veterans by promoting and highlighting the legacy of military attack helicopter pilots spanning Viet Nam, through the remainder of the Cold War, to the Gulf War, Afghan War, Global War on Terrorism, and other post-Cold War conflict eras.

The AHA envisions a world where the courageous legacy of the attack helicopter (pilots, crewmembers, and maintainers) lives on, igniting the spirit of national service and excellence in current and future generations.

Through educational experiences and community engagement, we honor the bravery, sacrifice, and selflessness of those who have chosen and those who continue to choose to fly into harm’s way to protect America’s freedoms in the skies above us, fostering a deep appreciation for military service and the critical role it has played in shaping our national history.

We Are Committed To:

Through these efforts, we strive to maintain the spirit of excellence, dedication, and service that defines the attack helicopter community.

History & Purpose

The Vietnam War gave birth to the attack helicopter. The new air mobility tactics employed begged for integral fire support to cover helicopter insertions and extractions. And troops on the ground needed immediate firepower to supplement field artillery fires while awaiting the arrival of Air Force, Navy, or Marine Corps strike aircraft. Those troops sometimes found themselves beyond artillery range and competing against other higher priority demands for close air support.

The need for an effective attack helicopter platform was clear. Innovators played at attaching weapons to rotary wing aircraft with varying degrees of success. In 1966, the United States produced its first dedicated attack helicopter, the UH-1 Charlie model gunship, for use by Army and Marine Corps forces in combat.

The following year, AH-1G Cobras arrived, the first American helicopter specifically designed purely for the attack role. In the years since the Vietnam era AH-1, ACH-47 and UH-1 gunships, ever more capable attack helicopters such as the AH-1Z, AH-6, AH-64 and MH-60 DAP have been developed and taken their place in the US force structure. AH-1s and AH-64s operate force structures of multiple nations around the world.

The Association began as an informal gathering of Vietnam era U.S. Army and Marine Corps attack pilots who trained at Cobra Hall on Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia, and grew to encompass a much broader membership.

The Association was established on 12 August 2024 for the primary purpose of providing educational experiences and community engagement that fosters a deep appreciation for military service and the critical role it has played in shaping history. Biannual conferences offer all our members opportunities for Education and Advocacy; Community Building; Support and Recognition; and Historical Preservation.
